Sharpen Thumbnails in Photoshop
Why bother? Sometimes when you shrink an image down to create a thumbnail, especially when the original image is large, the resulting thumb looks blurry. Yeah, but... The sharpen filter makes things look pixelated! So, here's a trick that can help you adjust the amount that sharpen changes the image. The Rundown 1. First, scale and crop your image to the desired size. 2. Now, go to Filter > Sharpen > Sharpen 3. Without doing anything in between, not even deselecting if applicable, go to Edit > Fade Sharpen... This item is often disabled, and changes its name depending on what you just did. If you look in the Edit menu right when you open up Photoshop, you'll see that it simply says Fade... and is disabled. 4. Set the opacity to 30-50 percent, depending on your needs. Much more than 50% of the sharpen filter usually produces jaggy results in my experience. That's it! Save out your compressed image you're on your way to having nice crisp thumbnails on your site. You'll find that Edit > Fade is a really cool way to take the edge off many useful filters in the future. |
